EWI has provided high end research and development services to industrial and government clients for over 30 years as a non-profit contract research laboratory with a focus on joining and related technologies. One key competency in the EWI portfolio is high power ultrasonic (HPUS) processes.
EWI is looking for a Senior Engineer specializing in HPUS system design and processing materials using HPUS. The candidate, depending on experience, will be expected to lead ultrasonic technology development or grow into a technology leadership role. The focus will be on ultrasonic welding of metals, however, the candidate will work on a range of materials, including metals and polymers, and a range of process including welding, additive manufacturing, brazing/soldering, and forming. Experience developing ultrasonic tooling and performing process development studies is required. Excellent communication skills, technical sales, proposal writing, project execution, technical report writing, and customer interaction are also requirements for this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Ultrasonic tool and system development
• Ultrasonic process development
• Engage with customers to understand needs for ultrasonic processes
• Interact with customers on the front-end of projects to understand their needs and translate that into project requirements and deliverables
• Apply knowledge and experience to the pursuit and execution of results that solve problems for the client per their needs and expectations; identify project expansion opportunities
• Assist other engineers with support such as research, lab work, or other tasks
• Execute project work according to project scope, deliverables, and overall customer expectations
• Write clear, concise, and accurate technical proposals, reports, and/or documents for customers and/or internal audience
• Effectively deliver oral presentations meant to inform or persuade both internal (peer and manager) and external (client) audiences
• Offer input into IRD funding and may develop proposals that require approval
• Develop technical or business opportunities and connect the customer with any of EWI’s broad range of resources
• Follow-up and interact with customers on reactive sales transactions; initiate the reactive sales process without guidance
• Interact with customer via “inquiry” process to explore sales opportunities
• Generally expected to manage medium and large sales opportunities
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in high power ultrasonics
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in material selection and testing
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in mechanical and electrical systems
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in CAD; Solidworks preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge in finite element modeling and simulation preferred
• Strong ability to develop technical work scopes for incorporation with proposals
• Demonstrated technical writing capability
• Exercises initiative and creativity within assigned project work
• Utilizes judgment in communication styles and behaviors; recognizes impact on other team members
• Exhibits proficient written and verbal communication with customers both internal and external
• Proven adaptability and flexibility as a part of team
• Ability to maintain excellent customer relationships both internal and external
• Proven success in a team-oriented environment
• Strong ability to plan and organize tasks
• Willingness to travel periodically (15-25%) to customers and conferences
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Office environment and laboratory/light production floor with ventilation, climate-control system, moderate lighting, and moderate noise level;
• Use finger and hand dexterity to type, adjust, move, handle, perform, operate, install, attach, remove, apply, grasp, grip, manipulate, and measure;
• Use vision to see, analyze, and adjust;
• Frequently move, transport, rotate, reach, pull, twist, adjust position, push, stand, stoop, bend and crouch; and
• Lift ten to 20 pounds on a frequent basis and 40 to 80 pounds occasionally
EDUCATION:
• Minimum of B.S. degree in engineering or related discipline
• M.S. or Ph.D. in relevant area of study is preferable
EXPERIENCE:
• Eight (8) or more years of industry experience in ultrasonic processes, with background in manufacturing, engineering consulting, and/or research environments
• Experience with the development of technical work scopes for incorporation with proposals
• US Citizenship is desired
